Often I’ll find myself with an great website idea–but it has to have that perfect domain name. For example- blarguments. The whole idea of blarguments would have come to a standstill if the domain had already been taken. Lucky for me, it wasn’t–at least the plural wasn’t…the guy that owns blargument.com still has a Godoaddy parked page, even though he told me back in July he was going to do something with it soon (his reasoning why he wouldn’t sell it). Nevertheless, if blarguments turns into a huge mega-millions website (yea right) I’ll just buy him out.
But I digress. Before buying any domain name I spend hours in front of some whois service. I used godaddy for a while until I found one that lets you check 10 domains at once. Eventually I left it for psychicwhois.com. In my opinion it is by far the best way to look up available domains–and at the same time get ideas for others. Their technology allows you to put in any or all of your search, and it will do searches of suggested terms. At the same time it searches .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, and .us. The multiple searches are more than helpful because if you find the BEST name you must have–it’ll tell you that .com is taken (of course), and .biz, etc are still available.
I am currently stuck with 2 mega ideas and I cannot find a proper domain for. I’ve spent umpteen hours at thesaurus.com and psychicwhois.com, and yet I still have nothing (the market niche I am going to get into is 250% saturated). I really wish I could share them and get some input. But, I know how ruthless people can be and I just don’t trust them. (Not you, of course…)
They even have a neat embed feature to spread around their psychic-ness.
I also need to add how much I absolutely abhor people who just buy the domain name and park it for no reason (except to own it). I have great loathing for those people. Every good idea I have is taken by a parked page. I wouldn’t be mad if it was a real site with a real purpose–but instead its those stupid link pages….

I think I prefer the plural of your doamin better than the singular of the parked page. Blarguments implies more than one ongoing discission or debete. The parked page sounds more like just a one sided argument.
Doamin names are so hard to come up with and I agree I can’t stand the page parker either.

You have a nice domain name, it’s funny and memorable. You are using it for your blog and that’s great. However, you can’t get mad at people who buy domains and then “park” them for ad money, because this process is called Pay Per Click monetization. You make money of that parked page if you are presenting ad links on it.
Also, many people buy domains to build them out, but have a lot of other domains they may be building out so that domain is on hold for a while. You can’t “loathe” the domain buyer justifiably because they own the domain and aren’t doing anything with it. That’s like driving down the freeway and seeing undeveloped land owned by someone and then getting mad because there isn’t a house or an amusement park or mall on it.
I suggest for those who want to understand the domain industry better and see that it is a legitimate and lucrative business that anyone can be a part of, go read the many blogs and websites dedicated to domain name monetization, such as dnjournal.com and sevenmile.com. Also, the Conceptualist.com is a good blog.
Good luck and keep searching for those domains you want!

Don’t feel bad. I’m a domaniac. Domain names pop in my head and I gotta have them. I have about 100 names and use only 5 of them. You probably hate me now.

@stephen
You’re right- if there’s money to be made and they’re doing it, I have no reason to hate them… I think I get mostly mad at the go-daddy parked pages. On those, only go-daddy makes money and these people still are paying $7/year…
@Colin
No I don’t hate you. I can’t hate an entrepreneur… I’m just glad you’re using 5 of them at least.
Instead of hate and loathing–I think I’m just frustrated…
